![]() The opening scene of a Norman Rockwell boys’ paradise of midwestern fields dotted with small towns suggest that all is right with the world. ![]() These autumn people of the carnival, who rise from the dust to tempt the souls of those yearning for something they do not have, pursue the boys through a narrative that is all the more suspenseful for combining the familiar landscape of a small town childhood with the eerie sounds and images of the evil that lies in wait for the unsuspecting.ĭisney’s production of Ray Bradbury’s book retains the poetry of the original in both the dialogue and visual landscape, making it an exceptionally haunting Halloween film. Hidden in the dark, the friends glimpse hints of the frightening truth about Cooger & Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show’s strange and horrific powers and realize that there is danger in their midst–danger that the adults around them ignore. Best friends Jim Nightshade and Will Halloway, who long to escape the confines of childhood and discover the excitement of being grown up, sneak out in the night to watch the newcomers set up their show on the outskirts of town. ![]() What could be a better Halloween read than the story Ray Bradbury judged the “best of all the things I have written”?Īs the weather turns crisp on the twenty-third of October, a carnival unexpectedly arrives in the seemingly idyllic Green Town. ![]()

![]() ![]() After all, I really like Scalzi as an author. I don’t really want the rest of the piece to be an attack. I really enjoyed The Collapsing Empire but liked the successive books less. I didn’t love the books, but I didn’t hate them. As a whole, the series is still a fun read, with easily digestible themes that make sense. The thing is, everytime I did it, I knew I was also lying to myself and anyone who would read the review. ![]() I wanted to talk about how the books weren’t as funny as I expected, and how Scalzi wrote them wrong. When I tried writing about them individually, I wanted to focus on a bunch of small things that felt off about the metaphor/allegory. As much as I’ve wanted to review these books on their own, I feel the best approach to talking about these novels is at a series level. Alright, I am finally ready to tackle a “review” on The Interdependency trilogy by John Scalzi. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All of it vividly brought to life by the skillful hands of Fiona Staples and writing of Brian K. ![]() They also unveiled Staples’ cover for the volume. Dubbed Saga: Compendium One, the softcover volume is due Oct. More importantly, you’ll find some brilliant commentary on life, politics, and ideology woven in between the space high jinks and crushing moments. The compendium will collect all 54 issues of Saga to date. But if you can handle Game of Thrones and similar shows you will be rewarded with some gripping entertainment. That’s what all great science fiction and fantasy does Saga does it better than others.įair warning, it is a lot to take in and some of the material is definitely rated R. ![]() The pages of Saga use fantasy and space adventure as a backdrop to some of the heaviest subjects. From transgender experiences, species/race mixing, false wars, and income inequality, and hate crimes. The sprawling list of characters, species, storylines, and adventures are a simulacrum for ideas and themes in the real world. I didn’t expect something so adult in nature but that same edginess allows for the creators to explore subjects Star Wars would never go near. Every chapter packs a punch and pulls you further in. Years went by before I finally picked up the compendium. The first time I saw a cover for one of the Saga comics I thought there would be an epic story played out on those pages.
